Breadcrumb Schema in WordPress: A Free Setup Checklist

Breadcrumb structured data describes a page’s place in a site’s navigation. It should reflect a useful path a visitor could follow. Google recommends a typical user path rather than copying the URL structure.

Schema Templates Free includes Breadcrumbs alongside Article, Local Business, FAQ Page, and Website templates. You can create a reusable template, assign it manually to a post or page, and preview the resolved JSON-LD. Conditional Auto Rules belong to the premium edition.

Before publishing a page with a Breadcrumbs template, work through these five checks:

1. Choose a real path

Identify the parent pages or categories a visitor would use to reach this page. Check that names and destination URLs match the site’s current navigation.

2. Inspect the resolved trail

Google’s Breadcrumb feature requires a BreadcrumbList with at least two ordered ListItem entries. Check each item’s position, name, and destination where applicable in the plugin’s JSON-LD preview. Do not add invented levels just to reach the minimum.

3. Assign deliberately

Apply the Free template to the relevant post or page in the editor, then save it. Review any page-level overrides when the path differs from the template’s shared values.

4. Check existing output

Inspect the public page for breadcrumb markup already emitted by the theme or another SEO plugin, and resolve duplicate or conflicting trails before adding another source.

5. Validate the public URL

Use Google’s Rich Results Test and inspect the published JSON-LD. Fix critical errors. Valid markup does not guarantee a breadcrumb display in Search.

This checklist is for structured data. A visible, clickable breadcrumb navigation trail is a separate site UI decision; inspect the page itself if that is also needed.
